Half Japanese Announce First New Album in 13 Years

As promised late last year — when they were asked to open for Neutral Milk HotelHalf Japanese have wrapped their first new album in 13 years. Due out September 2 through Joyful Noise, Overjoyed was produced by Deerhoof guitarist John Dieterich, which makes sense considering their shared love of, well, joyful noise.

That’s loud and clear in the lead single below: “In Its Pull,” a spastic blend of cauterized power chords and manic melodies. Half Japanese’s many cult followers also sound off in a short documentary, including magician Penn Jillette and members of Sonic Youth (Lee Ranaldo), R.E.M. (Peter Buck), The Velvet Underground (Moe Tucker) and Wye Oak (Jenn Wasner)…
