The most popular mixtape in years will soon be available on tape. A cassette version of the Guardians of the Galaxy film soundtrack, AKA Awesome Mix Vol. 1, will arrive on November 17 via Disney Music Group’s Marvel/Hollywood Records, according to Billboard.

The tape is the first music cassette from Disney since 2003 and comes with a download card. It will be available through December 31, only at independent retailers involved with Record Store Day‘s 2014 “Back to Black Friday” event. The fifth annual post-Thanksgiving celebration of independent record shops takes place November 28, and you can find participating stores on the RSD website.

The Awesome Mix Vol. 1 tape plays a starring role in the blockbuster movie, directed by James Gunn and starring Chris Pratt. The soundtrack topped the Billboard 200 album chart in August and has gone gold, with more than 500,000 copies shipped, as certified by the Recording Industry Association of America. A vinyl edition arrived on September 16, but a cassette release — which Gunn said August 1 was in the works — has always seemed only fitting.

The release announcement is also a milestone for the cassette format. Tapes have been undergoing a small-scale revival for several years, with the unrelated Cassette Store Day holding its second annual event this year (see contributor Maria Sherman’s list of The 20 Best Tapes of 2014 So Far). Still, cassette albums sold just 29,000 copies this year through August, according to Nielsen SoundScan, compared with 268 million in all of 1993, the first year in SoundScan’s database.
