In an interview with Carrie Battan for The New York Times, Claire Boucher opened up about starting over and handling the public’s attention. The 26-year-old musician known as Grimes also mentioned we’ll have to wait a little longer for her follow-up to 2012′s Visions.
When she released a video for “Go” early this summer, Boucher faced some backlash from her fans. (Even though, personally, I enjoyed it.) The song was originally written for Rihanna who chose not to use it, so Boucher recorded it herself, and self-released the video, which her brother directed. She told Battan, “It upsets a lot of my fans, and I get why it upsets them. Everybody was like, ‘Oh, Grimes is pandering to the radio.’” She was also shocked by the reaction to her response for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Boucher wrote a post refusing to take the challenge due to the drought in California and the foundation’s animal-testing policy.
The culmination of the backlash led to Boucher camping out in her hometown of Vancouver, where she reached an important decision about the new album that she was working on. “It sucked, so I threw it out and started again,” she said.
So Boucher went back to the drawing board, although she’s now in L.A. recording in her portable studio and seeking inspiration. She claims to be making a lot of new music, but there’s no definitive date for when she’ll release any of it to the public.
Not all the attention that Boucher has been receiving is negative. Recently, fans started a petition asking for her Boiler Room set to be posted on the site. Grimes played mostly Top 40 music at the venue and they’ve yet to release a video.
