As all of the summer festivals continue on their maddening quest to blend into one single, grey, monolothic lineup, it’s refreshing to know that there are still some weekend throwdowns that occupy their own swerving lane. Gonerfest 11, the festival organized by the excellent Memphis label of the same name, is the standard-bearer, regularly stacking the bill with a wide-ranging array of eardrum-assaulting rock bands from around the globe. This year is no exception. Topping the bill: a reunited Len Bright Combo, the rollicking mid ’80s outfit fronted by power-pop genius Wreckless Eric and featuring Bruce Brand and Russ Wilkins from The Milkshakes. Also on the bill: the herky-jerk acute-punk of Spray Paint, the marauding melodic punk outfit Radioactivity and a special set from Terry Six and Louie Bankston of the Exploding Hearts.
This is one of many great things in store from Goner in 2014. Later in the year, the label will issue new albums from Aussie synth-punk surrealists Ausmuteants and ramshackle rock outfit So Cow, as well as the debut from white-hot noise-punk outfit NOTS.
This year’s Gonerfest will take place from September 25th to 28th, and the initial batch of bands looks to carry on the fest’s tradition of loud, fast and fun. Order tickets here, and scope the first announced acts below.
