The Flaming Lips have set October 28 as the release date of With a Little Help From My Fwends, their Miley-and-MGMT-backed, track-by-track cover of the Beatles classic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Rolling Stone recently asked Cyrus about how she ended up working on the songs “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” and “A Day in the Life.” The pairing apparently started with one of the magazine’s interviews, wherein frontman Wayne Coyne said he dug the mushroom and rainbow costumes the singer wore at one of her concerts. She ended up inviting them to play “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” in L.A., then the band had her cut a few vocal tracks during an off day in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
“They taught me to sing into the sadness, and that’s helped me a lot on tour,” Cyrus explained, referring to the loss or her dog Floyd last month. “Because I would’ve felt like I can’t keep smiling, and I can’t, like, go dance on this gold car, and act like I’m happy when I’m fucking not.”
The friendship Cyrus and the Flaming Lips forged has extended well past one simple session, too. The group’s reportedly helping her write songs for her next album once she’s done with her Bangerz tour.
“On my last record, everything we did was with computers,” she said. “But they’re real musicians – they can change keys on a whim. I’ve never seen anything like it. They’ve had me on this journey that’s greater than anything I’ve been on. It’s really deep.”
