Followers of Wayne Coyne’s Instagram account found out some interesting news over the weekend: The Flaming Lips are currently in the studio covering the Beatles classic “Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds” alongside … Miley Cyrus. The duet is part of a planned tribute album take on Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
“If you’re a Beatles and John Lennon freak you gonna love love love this track!” Coyne wrote in a caption for a vocal booth shot of Cyrus. “Got Andrew [VanWyngarden] from MGMT too!”
MGMT and Cyrus have both appeared onstage with the band — the evidence is below — and the former worked on the decidedly dark Embryonic track “Worm Mountain.” None of which should be that surprising considering 2012′s The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends LP included collaborations with Ke$ha, Nick Cave, Lightning Bolt, Erykah Badu, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and a slew of other seemingly random guests from across a wide spectrum of indie and mainstream artists.
“Being around people that [are] mega-popular, that’s just another world,” Coyne told the Tampa Bay Times recently. “It’s fun. It’s like being with an alien from outer space. It’s like, ‘Oh, this is how you go to the bathroom. This is cool.’ If an alien came down here to visit, I would hope I’d get to go out with them and have a good time. That’s what I do with all these people.”
