“I have only one thing to do,” Fiona Apple repeats on “Container,” a new song she wrote for the title sequence of Showtime series The Affair, continuing, “And that’s be the way that I am/ And then sink back into the ocean.” For a singer/songwriter who has always resolutely gone her own way and launched her career with a debut album named Tidal, the image is certainly fitting. The track itself is mainly Apple’s untrammeled, unpredictable vocal, with sparsely thrumming accompaniment toward its close. Starring The Wire‘s Dominic West and Luther‘s Ruth Wilson, the show premieres October 12 and is about, yes, an affair. If it turns out to be compulsively watchable, at the very least this is a theme that it should be a pleasure to hear over and over. And it’s fine stopgap as we await a possible follow-up to 2012′s masterful The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do.
