In the brain-breaking weeklong avalanche that was this year’s South by Southwest, Curtis Harding stood out. With most acts split between hopeless amateurism and soulless professionalism, Harding’s set was a stunner, full of ragged, razor-edged soul music delivered with the raucousness and intensity of garage rock. It was all I could talk about for days after.
When Jewly Hight interviewed Curtis for Wondering Sound, his music began to make a bit more sense: his adolescence was as steeped in punk rock as it was gospel and R&B, so it’s natural that the music on his excellent debut would be a fusion of the two.
So we were thrilled when Harding stopped by to record a version of “Next Time” exclusively for Wondering Sound. It was meant to be a simple acoustic run-through, but Curtis took it to the next level, adding both bass and light percussion to round out the song and make it sound finished and, frankly, fantastic.
