An autopsy performed on DJ Rashad has confirmed that the rising Chicago producer died of an accidental drug overdose this past spring. According to NBC Chicago, the 35 year old was found unresponsive by a friend at 1:30 p.m. on April 26, and pronounced dead at the scene 20 minutes later due to a lethal combination of heroin, cocaine and alprazolam.

“I’ve only known him for around three years, but he had become a good friend and one of my biggest musical influences,” Kode9 — the head of Hyperdub, which released several DJ Rashad recordswrote soon after his passing. “He was one of the funniest, most positive people I’ve ever met and a true innovator. Everyone at the label is devastated by his passing and wish to send our sincere condolences to all his friends and family in Chicago, the Teklife crew and anyone anywhere who was graced by his presence and uplifted by his music.”

The tenth annual Afropunk festival announced a tribute to DJ Rashad yesterday, featuring members of the Teklife collective he belonged to, along with appearances by RP Boo, Lit City Trax founder J-Cush, and more. It was one of several key additions to the August 23-24 event, with the previously announced lineup of Cold Specks, Trash Talk and more now rounded out by hometown heroes Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, a Bad Brains set (thankfully, given what a daze H.R. was in the last time we saw him) fronted by guest vocalists, a Sun Ra tribute led by King Britt, and, well, here’s the whole rundown…
