Chicago’s DJ Rashad — pioneer and ambassador of the city’s footwork and juke styles — was found dead in an apartment on the city’s West Side yesterday afternoon. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, evidence at the scene have lead local police to attribute the cause to a drug overdose.
Last year, Rashad released Double Cup, a dizzying, frenetic mashup of traditional Chicago footwork with more abstract strains of electronic music. In a city with a rich history of dance music, Rashad represented the future, creating delirious, enervating music. Rashad was scheduled to perform in Detroit last night, and to release the EP We On 1 this week.
