As Here Lies Love continues its acclaimed New York run and gets set for openings in London and Sydney, the musical collaboration between David Byrne and Fatboy Slim will get a proper remix treatment through Todomundo! later this month. Due out September 30 and available for pre-order here, the collection was coordinated by co-producers Matt Stine and Justin Levine, with all proceeds going to Gawad Kalinga, a Philippines organization out to end poverty for 5 million families by 2024.
Here’s what Byrne had to say about the effort, along with a few samples:
These Here Lies Love tracks were made to be remixed. The versions of the songs in the show touch on various dance club genres, but are necessarily truncated in order to keep the narrative and energy moving along non-stop. So, when it became obvious that we’d need to establish a club-like atmosphere as folks entered the performing space (which feels and looks like a simulated dance club), we had the raw material ready and waiting.
Matt Stine and Justin Levine deconstructed the recorded music and scrambled it all kinds of ways to make an immersive audio world that merges seamlessly with the music of the show. Sometimes vocals from one song appear over the music of a completely different song, sometimes the orchestra from one song plays over the groove of another. There’s humor and exuberance, and to my ears it all works perfectly.
