The world may have not needed another compilation from The Kinks — just look at the laundry list over at Allmusic — but The Essential Kinks will have a few noteworthy selling points when it’s released on October 14 through Legacy Recordings. For one thing, frontman Ray Davies personally approved the collection’s 48 songs, which cover the ’60s all the way up through the ’90s. More importantly, however, is the inclusion of liner notes by David Bowie, something he must have done in between fueling new album rumors.

In other Kinks news, Davies has denied a MOJO claim that a Kinks reunion is planned for 2015, with or without his brother Dave. “MOJO is wrong,” the band wrote on Facebook. “There will be NO Kinks reunion without BOTH Ray and Dave Davies. Ray Davies claims to have never said this.”

Davies alluded to a reunion run earlier this year, saying, “I met Dave only last week to talk about getting back together again. We’ve also spoken a few times on the phone and emailed. He’s been composing his own songs, but I’d really like to write with him again. We both agree we don’t want to do old stuff or tour with past hits. It’s got to be something new.”

And now, a rundown of something old (via MusicTAP)…
