Danny Brown might not yet have his own Ben & Jerry’s flavor, but the singular Detroit rapper does now have his own TV theme song. Fresh Off the Boat, a new ABC sitcom based loosely on celebrity chef Eddie Huang’s similarly titled memoir, debuted last night. That’s Brown inimitably doing the theme, and he shared a clip via Instagram. (UPDATE: Hear the full song below.)
Brown isn’t Fresh Off the Boat‘s only connection to hip-hop. As Christina Lee writes over at Deadspin, the first few episodes also feature Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya,” Notorious B.I.G.’s “Big Poppa” and Too $hort’s “So You Want to be a Gangster.” In one scene, Huang, played by Hudson Yang, wears a Wu-Tang Clan T-shirt. In another, he wears a T-shirt for Nas’s Illmatic.
As Pitchfork notes, Brown was a guest on Huang’s Vice series, also titled Fresh Off the Boat. Brown has been working on a follow-up to 2013′s beguiling bummer of an album, Old. He has also said he’s writing a Dr. Seuss-inspired children’s book.
The first network primetime show to depict an Asian-American family in two decades, Fresh Off the Boat moves to its regular time slot on Tuesday, February 10 at 8 p.m. EST.
