D’Angelo‘s staggering Black Messiah is the unusual surprise album release to be streaming on Spotify, and it’s available via iTunes; the CD is already in stores. Now, those looking to own the neo-soul legend’s first new album in almost 15 years on vinyl can start reserving copies. Pre-orders of Black Messiah on wax are available via MyPlay Direct (or Phonica for U.K. listeners), with a February 10, 2015 expected release date.
D’Angelo rushed out the album in the aftermath of Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson shooting and killing the unarmed Michael Brown, as The New York Times reports, quoting various people close to the release. D’Angelo reportedly called his co-manager Kevin Liles after the grand jury decided not to indict. “He said: Do you believe this? Do you believe it?’” Liles told the Times. “And then we just sat there in silence. That is when I knew he wanted to say something.”
The RCA label had penciled in Black Messiah for early 2015. But D’Angelo was ready to bring it in the world as soon as possible. “The one way I do speak out is through music,” he reportedly told his tour manager, Alan Leeds. “I want to speak out.”
D’Angelo and RCA pulled various all-nighters in the month before the releasing, finalizing such details as the album art and the tracklist, D’Angelo’s “collaborators and confidants” told the Times. Some RCA staffers heard the album for the first time at Sunday night’s Manhattan listening party. D’Angelo’s longtime collaborator Russell Elevado said D’Angelo only completed the music roughly three weeks ago. “it’s pretty much right out of the oven — it’s still hot,” Elevado told the Times.
