We’ve had sporadic sightings of D’Angelo throughout the year. He stopped by the Red Bull Academy of Music for a talk with author Nelson George. They were joined by D’Angelo’s old friend Questlove. And although the artist originally appeared as the headliner of Brooklyn’s Afropunk Festival, his name disappeared from the billing before the event took place, which caused speculation that he would not be in attendance. But D’Angelo did show up, an hour after his scheduled stage time, to play a set that was comprised primarily of covers. The only song that he performed off either of his studio albums was “Greatdayndamornin.”

Now he has announced a 17 date European tour. The press release states:

Known for frequently changing his set lists, D’Angelo and his band The Vanguard combine many popular hits with new songs and fresh interpretations of covers. Taking on the role of band leader, singer, guitarist, and keyboardist, D’Angelo surrounds himself with award-winning groups of musicians. This edition of The Vanguard includes bassist Pino Palladino, guitarists Jesse Johnson and Isaiah Sharkey, keyboardist Cleo “Pookie” Sample and drummer John Blackwell. Despite the increasing popularity of sequencers, auto-tune, backing tracks, and lip synching, D’Angelo and his band The Vanguard perform every note live.

Keep in mind, at the beginning of the summer, D’Angelo’s manager Kevin Liles swore we’d see the follow-up to 2000′s Voodoo before the end of 2014. Now that December is fast-approaching, it looks like this was just another false alarm. We’ll have to hang onto the tour news as evidence that the long-awaited D’Angelo album will, in fact, arrive one day.
