Now that he’s finally released his first solo record, Damon Albarn is ready to return to the stage. And we don’t mean the full-on Blur reunion fans really want. More like yet another stab at the theater crowd. He’s not doing an animated opera this time, though; try a traditional musical, set to hit London’s West End sometime in the near future.

“It’s funny for me to say ‘I’m writing a musical’, but, yes, that’s what I’m doing next,” he told the Daily Star. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do because musicals are great when they’re done well.

He continued, “[It] was going to be a left-field, experimental opera, but it’s lurched into a mainstream musical for families. I’m trying to summon up the spirit of Lionel Bart.”

That’d be the composer best known for writing Oliver!, a smash hit that was eventually turned into an Oscar-winning film. As for the likelihood of Albarn hitting the studio before the year’s over, he recently reunited with artist/Gorillaz co-founder Jamie Hewlett and has been writing “a lot of uptempo songs” that sound like the side project. Let’s just hope it’s a little more uplifting than his last batch of minor-keyed material…
