As Death Cab For Cutie wrap their new album with producer Rich Costey (Franz Ferdinand, Muse, Interpol) in Los Angeles, the indie rock vets have announced the imminent departure of Chris Walla. According to a press release, the guitarist/producer will play the rest of their current festival run, with Walla’s last performance happening during a headlining set at Victoria’s Rifflandia event next month.

“Deciding to leave the band was not, and is not, easy,” Walla wrote in a statement to The Stranger. “It’s really, really sad. I love my bandmates, and I’m proud of what we’ve done, and mercifully, those things don’t change with my departure. Moving forward, my plans are simply to continue making music, producing records, and erring on the side of benevolence and beauty whenever possible. Darkness may find me, but I shall never choose it.”

“We’ve had an incredible 17 years of making music with Chris and are very proud of what we’ve accomplished together,” the group added, “including our eighth studio album which we have just put the finishing touches on. We will miss Chris and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career. We’re excited about sharing new music, and seeing all of you very soon.”

More than just a mere founding member, Walla has manned the boards for most of Death Cab For Cutie’s material; in fact, their next effort is the first to feature an outside producer. Check out a rundown of Death Cab’s final dates as a foursome below…
