The Venn diagram here is more like a Möbius strip. A. G. Cook‘s PC Music collective updates, among other things, the type of shimmery disco-pop that first sent Madonna on “Holiday”; PC Music affiliate Sophie has reportedly worked on the Material Girl’s new Rebel Heart. Charli XCX‘s “Doing It,” from last year’s mighty Sucker, was described by our own Charles Aaron as “Madonna-esque disco-pop”; like Madonna, Charli’s a zeitgeist-conscious striver who’s unafraid of exploring the next new microgenre. The “Boom Clap” singer brought on a guest vocal from Rita Ora for the “Doing It” video, superfluously yet apropos of the song’s “got your back for life” credo, and now Cook has blasted the whole track through his hyper-digital, extra-sweet aesthetic, zooming from cutesy chimes to delicate keys, never losing at least the implication of dancefloor pulse. “Joy like a jewel, let it sparkle”? More like Bejeweled — and, maybe, just as addictive.
