Surf’s up for a new biopic about the Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson. Love & Mercy, starring Paul Dano and John Cusack as Wilson at two different ages, screened at the Toronto International Film Festival this past fall. It’s also on the schedule for next month’s South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, and it’s set for a wider theatrical release on June 5.
Now the film’s first trailer has arrived. Dano, as Wilson in the ’60s, says he’s “going to make the greatest album ever made,” while Cusack, as Wilson in the ’80s after a period of reclusion, struggles to “get back to yourself” — or that’s how Elizabeth Banks, playing Brian’s second wife Melinda Wilson, puts it in the teaser. Beach Boys classics “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “I Get Around” and “God Only Knows” play in the background.
Wilson is scheduled to release a new solo album, No Pier Pressure, on April 7 via Capitol. Guests include Kacey Musgraves, She & Him and fun.‘s Nate Ruess.
