Beyoncé swooped in to redefine the year in music at the end of 2013, and she’s staking a claim to a fair chunk of 2014, too. She’s set to appear on Nicki Minaj‘s December 15 album The Pinkprint, but first, Queen B recently expanded and reissued her sneak-attack “visual album” from last December as the Beyoncé Platinum Edition Box Set, including new songs “Ring Off” and “7/11,” plus some star-studded remixes. Now a new behind-the-scenes video on her YouTube channel shows an interview with Jonas Åkerlund, who directed Beyoncé‘s “Haunted” and “Superpower” shorts.
Åkerlund explains how the “Haunted” video took inspiration from the song’s “cinematic” feel, while the clip for Frank Ocean collaboration “Superpower” ran opposite to the music’s serene, futuristic doo-wop. “If you want your average video, I’m probably not your guy,” the veteran video director says. “Part of my challenge with her is to take her to places that maybe she hasn’t been.” Below, see how they got there.
