What next from the mouth of André 3000? The OutKast half has already helped create one of the most impressive discographies in rap (see OutKast: A Career in Review). And in a new trailer for Jimi: All Is by My Side, a Jimi Hendrix biopic starring the MC born André Benjamin, he does a persuasive job embodying the rock icon — including wailing on the guitar and, yes, even pulling off Hendrix’s stage trick of playing the six-string with his teeth.
The film, which premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and also had screenings at South by Southwest 2014, will see a wider release on September 26. Written and directed by John Ridley, who’s coming off an Oscar for writing 12 Years a Slave, Jimi: All Is by My Side follows Benjamin as Hendrix during a time when the singer/guitarist was transforming from a backing musician in New York to the international legend he became. “I want my music to go inside the soul of a person,” André-Jimi says in the trailer.
For more from the film, see a clip of Benjamin interacting with co-star Imogen Poots, who plays Linda Keith, the model who inspired the Rolling Stones’ “Ruby Tuesday.” Earlier this year, Jimi: All Is by My Side producer Danny Bramson told Billboard the rapper honed his chops for the film with six-hour guitar practice sessions. Check out how successful he was in the video trailer below (yes, it came out just before the July 4 weekend, but like Hendrix’s “Star Spangled Banner,” it has a long expiration date).
