American Horror Story has brought on Lady Gaga, and it’s a natural move for both.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the ARTPOP singer has become the first announced casting for the FX anthology series’ fifth season.

AHS has a longstanding history with music. Co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk were also behind Glee. The first half of the last season was heavy on anachronistic cover songs, including material by Nirvana, Fiona AppleDavid Bowie and Lana Del Rey, and the Halloween episode contained soundtrack music from Pere Ubu. Stevie Nicks performed on a previous season. For them, Gaga’s presence is quite the publicity coup.

For Gaga, the show could allow her to continue showcasing her conventional vocal and acting chops without necessarily skewing too conventional. With her recent Tony Bennett collaborative album and Oscar Sound of Music medley, she has been reinventing herself as a more broadly appealing figure after ARTPOP. The horror genre of the series may give Gaga a chance to stay on that path without necessarily becoming as all-accommodating as an Adele or Sam Smith.
