This week, Canadian fuzz-pop perfectionists the Courtneys announced a new single, “Mars Attacks.” Given the band’s retro affinities (see: The Courtneys Take on ’80s TV Themes), the song title’s echo of Tim Burton’s 1996 film Mars Attacks! might not be just a coincidence. But the phrase also captures how Jessica Lange theatrically conquers David Bowie‘s classic “Life on Mars?” on last night’s season debut of American Horror Story: Freak Show.

At the very least, this touchstone from 1971′s Hunky Dory suits the program’s titular subject. That much becomes clear when Lange, as the ringmistress, belts, “It’s the freakiest show.” AHS: Freak Show is also expected to feature Lange singing Lana Del Rey later this season, and given the series’ history of musical connections, other covers may also be in store. Bowie, in the cover art for upcoming compilation Nothing Has Changed, is shown gazing at himself in a mirror. Do you suppose when he was brushing his teeth this morning, he found himself seeing Lange’s face?
