A poised, celestial chorus bookends Markéta Irglová’s latest record with a charmingly romantic refrain: “You can have whatever you can dream of.” On September 23, the Academy Award-winning Once star and former half of folk duo the Swell Season will release her sophomore effort as a solo artist, Muna, on Anti- Records. The album has a mystical quality that lulls and sways with imaginative orchestrations and narratives. On “Time Immemorial” dreamy whispers drift over seas of ornate violins and gently prodding piano numbers, contrasting with the drama of “Fortune Teller,” a bouncier venture into snappy, Persion percussion that spotlights Irglová’s lush vocal versatility. Muna speaks an arcane language of its own, but maintains a cohesion threaded together by a common theme: growing up. Of the record, Irglová says, “The result is from the process of growing up — going through difficult times, getting lost and feeling left alone to find my way back.”
Stream Muna below. Markéta Irglová is about to embark on an international tour, and we were lucky enough to snag two tickets to give away for her NYC date at (le) Poisson Rouge on October 10. Be on the lookout for how to enter when we announce details on October 1.
